In a new landscape concerned about the issues of diversity and inclusion, seeing Naomi Scott portraying a Disney Princess was a big step toward a bigger goal.
So let’s talk about the premiere of the movie Aladdin held at El Capitan Theatre on May 21, 2019 in Los Angeles, California.
Scott wore a pastel pink custom Brandon Maxwell gown with flowy shoulder overlays, an asymmetrical cutout at the waist and a long train which made the ensemble look even more royal.
Reminiscing about the event in an Instagram post from last year, her stylist Zadrian Smith acknowledged the task at hand and the cultural implications of the gown.
“The stakes were indeed very high. Naomi Scott joined a list of elite actresses who all had been crowned Disneyprincesses, a very coveted title in Hollywood. An international global press tour, that would have all eyes, meant that every ‘I’ had to be dotted and every ’T’ crossed. From the moment Naomi told me she had the role of Princess Jasmine, the research began.
We looked at cultural and sartorial references from as far back as 375 CE, from across the globe, with a laser focus on Asian and Middle Eastern cultures. Our Princess Jasmine had to encompass a timeless and sophisticated elegance, with a brave sense of edge. We knew girls across the globe would see Naomi on the red carpet and what we wanted to portray to them was a sense of beauty, strength, confidence and love for themselves in their own skin, who better to help us with this task than stylist turned designer Brandon Maxwell, who truly understood the challenge at hand, and delivered a gown so perfect I was in tears. The subtle slashes in the bodice, the exacting length of the bolero, the bold colour, the soft durability of the fabric, the pockets and that TRAIN!”
Manicurist Ashlie Johnson used a NAILS.Inc nail polish in the shade Major Player to paint her nails.
Aladdin is a 2019 American musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Guy Ritchie, from a script he co-wrote with John August, it is a live-action adaptation of Disney‘s 1992 animated film of the same name, which itself is based on the eponymous tale from One Thousand and One Nights.
In the movie, Naomi Scott plays the role of Princess Jasmine, the Sultan’s daughter and princess of Agrabah who wants to have a say in how she lives her life and falls in love with Aladdin (played by Mena Massoud).
