I like writing about people who can help me understand cultures that are distant and different from mine, because I think that curiosity for what we perceive as separate from us serves as a boost to reshape our society into one that is more empathetic (such a tough topic right now, I might add).

That’s what brought me to Jennie Kim, a lovely member of the very famous South Korean girl group Blackpink.

I’ve been in love with her outfit for last year’s MET Gala since I first saw it on the red carpet and I had to dig deep into Korean names–that I’m not exactly familiar with–because I wanted to be accurate while I credited her glam team for the occasion.

So let’s dive into it.

Jennie donned a custom-made cobalt blue Alaïa dress designed by Pieter Mulier, inspired by some of the looks presented in the Fall-Winter 2024 show. The gown was crafted in crepe georgette using 13 meters of just one fabric and it took the atelier team 200 hours to make.

One thing I find truly fascinating about Korean culture is the way they do their makeup (something that I am analyzing lately because I am pale as a ghost and with a neutral undertone it has always been difficult for me to find the right products, because when I did, they were also always very expensive).

In this instance Jennie was made up by Won Jo Yeon, who opted for an intense black eyeliner trait on the upper lid, paired with little chunks of individual false lashes on the lower lash line, towards the temples.

Sculpting or blush were minimal, in line with the delicate vibe of her dress.

Her hair was styled by Lee Seon-Yeong, in a knotted updo resembling a blooming flower, indeed in a video interview for Vogue she said that the hairstyle–paraphrasing–was intended to honor the theme of the event: The Garden of Time.

When it came to nails, the Korean beauty worked with manicurist Naomi Yasuda, who created a set of iridescent French tips for the entertainer using Aprés Gel-X Almond Medium Tips over which she applied an Aprés Light & Shadow Sheer Gel Couleur nail polish in the shade ‘Girl Dinner‘.

Kim was styled by Minhee Park, already known for her work with Blackpink.

For the gala, Park emphasized Jennie‘s sweet and gentle nature by using fabrics that are soft but rich in color at the same time, striking the balance between having a moment on the steps while also choosing subtle elegance, which is often Jennie‘s favorite way of approaching fashion while out and about for major or minor events.
