Today’s article has been living in the back of my mind for quite some time because I love writing about brands that are not necessarily known to the major public.

The red carpet is now full of paid partnerships and while we all are aware of it, I think we should also give space to people that do not have the same privilege–that’s how I came to my conclusion.

Apparently, Irina‘s reasoning behind her fashion choice for the Cannes Film Festival 2023 was not that dissimilar from mine.

For the event, Shayk donned a Mowalola black and red leather criss-cross bandeau top and matching low-rise floor-length skirt from the Fall 2023 Ready-to-Wear ‘Dark Web‘ collection, paired with black open toe platform shoes.

According to the brand, the collection “explores the techno-apocalyptic tones that colour contemporary existence”, something truly different from the pompous gowns that we are used to see during this event.

The Russian stunner complemented the ensemble with a Messika High Jewelry Akh-Ba-Ka necklace featuring a remarkable 33-carat diamond and inspired by ancient Egypt.

Per a British Vogue interview, here is why Irina went for such an unconventional designer choice: “I always look out for young designers, and Mowalola’s last show caught my eye. […] I knew I wanted to wear and support a female designer in Cannes, and I thought this look would be the perfect fit – it felt special.” […]

“It’s important to celebrate and spotlight young creatives – at the end of the day, this is an industry built on supporting one another. Mowalola is a talented designer – it’s an honour to celebrate her work in Cannes.”

For those who don’t know it, Mowalola Ogunlesi is a Nigerian-born creative (people wearing her designs are personalities such as Paloma Elsesser, Alton Mason, Spanish DJ and model Sita Abellán and Rihanna to name just a few).

What can we say about Shayk‘s beauty? Honestly, nothing.

Indeed her makeup artist Tatyana Makarova kept the model’s face flawless by applying a thin veil of foundation, just a hint of bronzer to sculpt the face, highlight on the highest points of her cheeks and light mascara coats to frame her incredible eyes–all products used were courtesy of Pat McGrath Labs (listed down below, thanks to Makarova herself).

The model’s hair was styled by Hos Hounkpatin in a sleek, middle parted do, which was obviously the best choice, since the dress was the center of attention anyway.

Shayk was dressed by Natasha Colvin, a stylist with taste from other times.

I feel a sense of calm whenever I look at her Instagram, her aesthetic is carefully crafted, selecting black, grey and sable tones, which made the choice of such an outfit unusual for her.

At the same time I acknowledge that she has an edgy and sensual feel to her work, that can be truly expressed through an unconventional ensemble like this one–to me, it spells range.
