I am in awe of all the people who make me remember why I love fashion so much and who do not make me feel alone when I realize that I prefer the weirdest outfits that may be on display in an imaginary shop window.
That being said, I want to introduce you to the incredible talent of the non-binary Emma D’Arcy. I literally gasped when I saw them on the red carpet of the London premiere of “House of the Dragon” in Leicester Square on August 15, 2022 in London, England.
For the big premiere, Emma wore an Acne Studios ensemble consisting of a striped white men’s shirt, a yellow oversized vest with a plunging neckline and long, skinny black vinyl pants from the Spring 2023 Menswear collection.
They paired the look with shiny dark blue Roker ‘Lea‘ platform shoes, a pair of Acne Studios blue gloves featuring an intricate beaded design, a Hirotaka Akoya Pearl and Black Onyx Spear paired with a Sea Anemone earring on their left ear and an Akoya Pearl and Black Onyx Sea Anemone earring on their right ear.
Emma was helped by her stylist Rose Forde, who said that the objective of the night was “regal and theatrical”. Rose also told Vogue why they chose Acne Studios for the premiere: “Emma likes to play with the idea of costume and the performative element of clothes and we tend to lean towards having either high drama or finding a character to explore in a look. […] There is real consideration to each design so somehow it feels almost like you have… owned the piece for years” Forde continued.
As for D’Arcy personal style, the stylist stated that her client “already has a brilliant sense of personal style” which they need to “evolve to the red carpet”.
Emma, in conversation with W Magazine, described the outfit as “self-consciously ‘dressed-up’ and drippingly romantic in equal measure”.
The members of their glam team also talked about their respective creative processes to the publication. Hairstylist Jody Taylor explained: “We bleached the hair a week before the premiere, so we had some roots coming through—which adds depth and texture. The styling is very much inspired by the Blitz KStayids, but with a stripped-back, modern approach to make it feel believable, and not like a caricature.”
Makeup artist Justine Jenkins created a smokey eye on D’Arcy, with blown out copper eyeshadow even underneath Emma‘s eyes using vegan and cruelty free products from Hourglass Cosmetics, and bleached their brows using Bleach London Plex Bleach–no mascara involved.
Keep an eye on this incredible human being because I am sure that they are going to bring the best of fashion and performance to the red carpet. Their style made me feel seen and validated and it warms my heart to know that they are just starting their journey to stardom and we are all here witnessing it.

In the series, Emma D’Arcy plays the adult version of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen: King Viserys‘ firstborn child. They are a dragonrider and pure blood Valyrian.
