Ariana DeBose is a newly Oscar nominated actress, making history as the first Afro Latina openly queer woman to ever get an Oscar nomination. Let’s see what she wore to the award ceremony last year, while waiting for her next time.

DeBose donned a one-shoulder orange Atelier Versace asymmetric cutout gown from the Fall-Winter 2020 collection. Expertly micro-draped, the vivid orange design further accentuated Ariana‘s figure with Swarovski crystals along the draping.

She did not play games when it came to jewelry, indeed she wore Harry Winston creations: a pair of Sparkling Cluster Diamond earrings set in platinum, a Secret Wonder Diamond bracelet and a Sparkling Cluster Diamond ring among others.

The look was completed with a pair of Stuart Weitzman rose gold platform sandals.

According to an exclusive interview that her stylists had with The Hollywood Reporter, the duo made up of Zadrian Smith and Sarah Edmiston had roughly six days to put together the look for the night, while also living in London when they got the confirmation.

They ended up choosing an orange Atelier Versace gown; here is what they pictured in their heads ahead of the event: “In the fitting, we talked about the idea that it’s her arrival, she’s in a room with the who’s-who of the industry, and when she walks on that stage, we want people to say, ‘Yes, we know you’re talented, you look amazing, welcome’.”

We can also very much appreciate the fact that both Harry Winston and Versace had no problems in lending their products to a newcomer like Ariana, in the past it would have been a bit of a struggle: “You typically see Harry Winston dressing very known faces, but they said yes right away, and that speaks to their ability to see her as someone who’s about to break out in a major way.”

Smith went on: “Early on I wondered, could we get Versace? Only because she is a fresh face, but they replied back right away and said, ‘Let’s make this work’. They couldn’t do custom because we only gave them five days, but we knew they’d come through with something amazing.”

Makeup artist Carola Gonzalez painted DeBose‘s face using e.l.f. Cosmetics products, here is her idea of the look: “Ariana has beautiful almond-shaped eyes, which made it the focus of my makeup today. I wanted her skin to look flawlessly radiant, with a sparkly eye, and a lip that complemented her skin tone and didn’t compete with the colors of the gowns. I wanted her to look like the star she is.”

Full breakdown straight from Gonzalez‘s Instagram (slightly edited for clarity):
