Zazie Beetz walked the red carpet of her first MET Gala in 2019.

For the ‘camp’ occasion, she wore a Thom Browne 3-ply mohair suit with black grosgrain tipping, a white pique shirt with french cuffs and a black silk faille bow tie. On the back, a double duchess wedding dress in duchess satin, Lyon lace and organza with hand-embroidered pearl lace detailing.

The look came from the Spring 2018 Menswear collection.

In an interview for Vanity Fair, she explained how her stylist Jason Bolden and her came up with the look: “Beetz’s look for the event […] was months in the making. […] after she found out the theme for this year’s function was “camp,” she and her stylist, […] had initially had the idea for a “wedding”-inspired dress […]. Bolden then linked up with Thom Browne, after the designer dressed Beetz for a premiere, and the two of them eventually landed on this fusion.”

Zazie further clarified: “Thom Browne specializes in the suit element, but [for this look], in terms of camp, blurring the lines, essentially, of masculinity and femininity, and leaning into the absurdity of the concept.”

“I kind of wanted the dress to look a little Victorian in the back, with different detailing and fabric and colors and stuff like that. In the end, it became an amalgamation of what I found would make it interesting and beautiful and in the parameters of this concept.”

The headpiece was created by Stephen Jones out of a Thom Browne cardigan.

Thom Browne himself talked about the inspiration behind the runway show from which the look was taken from: “The inspiration for the look was the beauty in men embracing their feminine sides and women embracing their masculine sides, speaking to the confidence in expressing true individuality… It is special because Zazie fully embodies the inspiration.”
