We can finally start with the coverage of this year’s MET Gala, and for all of you avid readers out there, there will be a lot to entertain you with. Let’s start with the Black goddess Yara Shahidi.

Shahidi looked magnificent in a custom Dior Haute Couture dress, topped with a gold tulle cloak. The brown silk strapless gown was embroidered by Vermont Paris with sequins and crystals using needle and tambour techniques. Matching gloves and gold Dior sandals were also part of the look.

The sheath’s ingenious construction and embellishment conveyed the impression of a single, seamless length of fabric. The look was meant to pay tribute to Josephine Baker, the boundary-breaking American-French entertainer, Resistance agent, and civil rights activist.

Interestingly enough, apparently Josephine Baker was a friend of Christian Dior, as stylist Jason Bolden and Shahidi found out during their research for the outfit and explained to Vogue US: “We used archival photos [during research], the ones we loved most were from her American tour where she wore only Dior!”

The look was paired with a Cartier Sixiéme Sens High Jewelry Transitional necklace and onyx Cartier High Jewelry earrings with platinum and diamonds.

You know I am a sucker for makeup details and I couldn’t wait to know more about Yara‘s makeup look, her makeup artist Emily Cheng wrote a full product breakdown on her Instagram and I am so glad to share it with you all (edited for clarity):

Overall, Yara‘s association with Dior and the maison’s activism is a testament to her bravery and her will to fight for all the right reasons. She is setting a great example for her community and since the youth is ready to make a change, there is no better individual to lead the movement.
