Honoring Selena Gomez‘s nomination for this year’s Emmy Awards, I wanted to go a few months back in time in order to revisit what she wore to the ceremony in January.
Gomez donned a custom Oscar de la Renta sequin fern embroidered shoulderless gown, paired with burgundy René Caovilla Cleo 110mm Velvet sandals.
According to the brand: “From the first sequin-embroidered fern tendril to the finishing stitch, the gown accounts for over 450,000 paillettes in shades of burgundy and 930 hours of hand-embroidery.”
To complement her ensemble she opted for a breathtaking Jean Schlumberger by Tiffany & Co. ‘Bird on a Rock‘ necklace, crafted in platinum and 18k gold. The piece features a morganite of over 35 carats with diamonds and pink sapphires.
She also wore a pair of diamond stud earrings, a Tiffany & Co. cocktail ring on her right ring finger, a Jean Schlumberger by Tiffany & Co. Sixteen Stone Ring in Platinum with Diamonds on her left middle finger, a Jean Schlumberger by Tiffany & Co. Rope Two-row Ring on her left ring finger and a Tyler Ellis ‘Lily Clutch‘.
Makeup artist extraordinaire Hung Vanngo matched Selena‘s makeup with her burgundy dress, hence why the vampy look. Reddish hues on the lids and a crimson lip paired incredibly well with her sultry, fluttery false lashes.
The pro also shared what products he used with his Instagram followers, here is the list:
“On lips: Rare Beauty Lip Liner in ‘Strong‘ & lipsticks in shades ‘Strong‘ and ‘Devoted‘.
Gorgeous full lashes are from Lashify. Here is my lashes map: B8, B10, D10, D10, D12. I also stacked some C12 on the outer upper corner for extra volume.”
When it came to the hair, Marissa Marino styled the “Emilia Pérez” actress’s hair in a deep parted updo, culminating in a sleek chignon, giving the necklace broad space to shine.
After some digging, I was also able to find a tutorial Marino shared with the tool brand Tangle Teezer and I’d like to share it with you in case you’d like to replicate it at home:
“We started by shampooing, spraying in a detangler and then brushing it through with the Tangle Teezer Ultimate Detangler, which has patented two-tiered teeth that gently detangles while causing less breakage and draws the treatment through the hair.
I blow dried her hair straight, sectioned out her front bang and clipped it up, while brushing the rest of her hair into a tight ponytail using the Tangle Teezer Ultimate Styler, which has unique bottle-shaped teeth that have been designed to dry-style and effortlessly finish any look. I love how this brush grips the hair without creating frizz for a smooth finish.
Then I wrapped the ponytail around into a bun and secured it with bobby pins and let down the front section, curling it away from her face to frame it. Lastly I brushed through with the Tangle Teezer Ultimate Styler, which helps me finish the look and enhance shine.”
The manicure was also an integral part of the look and Selena‘s long time friend and manicurist Tom Bachik settled on a custom “Black Cherry” hue for the entertainer’s nails.
Here below you’ll find out what I was able to gather from the brands involved in the manicurist’s work and him personally.
The pro started off with a meticulous manicure, using the Tweezerman’s Rose Gold Manicure Set.
Bachik revealed on his Instagram that the shape of the nail was super important because Selena and him wanted to pair her custom dark color with a strong oval shaped nail to complement the pattern in her dress.
“I held the smooth side of my Tweezerman ProFile at about a 45 degree angle while filing from side to center. It will automatically create that perfect shape” wrote Bachik.
For the custom color, Tom started with a super thin layer of PLA Black Gel Liner in #01 and then applied a coat of PLA ‘You Can’t Tell Anyone‘ #190, a rich deep purple.
“To create the deep cherry effect, I took a small gel brush and dipped it into red chrome powder.
Lastly, I applied a thick coat of PLA Non Wipe Top Coat for a high gloss shine.”
To rehydrate cuticles and skin, the celebrity nail artist mixed the Chanel ‘Le Blanc‘ Huile Light Creator Oil with the Rare Beauty Find Comfort Hydrating Hand Cream for a little pampering before hitting the red carpet.
Selena was styled by Erin Walsh, something that was visible if you take into account the loud and energetic approach to styling (Walsh‘s trademark) this time, compared to the more subdued one the “Only Murders in the Building” actress had while working with Kate Young in 2022 when Selena wore a chic white Celine ensemble to the same event.
I think that Gomez is very motivated right now and that her excitement for this new phase of her life shines through this different attitude towards clothes.
I feel like she was trying to prove herself in the past, hence why the more serious looks, while now she’s very keen on expressing her fiery heritage and lust for life, especially after her Lupus diagnosis.
We can’t truly blame her for that–she has been suffering a lot–and many of us can’t even imagine the pain she had to endure to land on her feet where she is now; people should definitely show her more grace.
