Stylist: Law Roach himself of course
Outfit: custom Oscar de la Renta by Fernando J Garcia
Makeup Artist: Renee Sanganoo
Hairstylist: Antoinette Hill
Jewelry: Bulgari

I love writing about unconventional people and since on this website we talk about those who work behind-the-scenes of the entertainment world, the narrative can be shifted to the stylists themselves, especially if they are a force to be reckoned with.

Law Roach, the famous Image Architect, deserves his own spotlight because his ability to create fashion moments that will be remembered from now on, is a skill that not many have mastered yet.

That being said, let’s celebrate his genius, especially on an occasion such as this year’s CFDA Fashion Awards.

For the award show, Law wore a custom Oscar de la Renta silk faille polka dot opera coat. This was also the first time that the brand has created something for men in its creative history.

Roach obviously accessorized the look with a Bulgari Serpenti ring with snakewood and diamonds in 18kt yellow and white gold, an emerald cushion ring with diamonds and black platform boots (barely visible, so we could not even try to identify them for the sake of accuracy).

One of the most meaningful things about the look was the nod to the late André Leon Talley who sadly died on January 18, 2022. I could see the resemblance when I first saw the cape on the red carpet, but I wanted to be sure and I had the long-awaited confirmation after watching an interview Roach had with Access together with Kerry Washington.

Here is what he revealed: “My look is also paying homage to the late great André Leon Talley, so I just wanted to give him a slight little nod tonight.” To which Kerry replied: “Because if you know who he is, he’s beaming up in heaven, he’s beaming in heaven for this.”

The late Talley was an American fashion journalist, stylist, creative director, and editor-at-large of Vogue magazine and he loved wearing floor-length capes. He was a pioneer in a very elitist industry–the parallels with Law Roach are endless.

His makeup was courtesy of Renee Sanganoo, while his hair was as always courtesy of Antoinette, who already works as his hair artist for “Legendary” on HBO Max, for red carpet appearances and editorials.

As far as Law is concerned, he has always been an example for me, because he started out his career as a fashion outsider: he never interned, he was never anyone’s assistant, he didn’t really have any mentors. As an unknown, he built and nurtured relationships with the brands and PR teams that handled the brands. People had to take chances on him, and he had to prove himself every day to them, and he still does to this day as he admitted several times.

My life story has its parallels to his and seeing what he was able to achieve pushes me forward each day–sometimes you are conditioned to think that there is just a certain path to reach a certain goal and it is never the case.

Thank you Law, thank you for what you have done for us underdogs.
