One of the many revelations of this award season, in an effort to support diversity in film roles, was actor and musician LaKeith Stanfield.

It’s always refreshing to see a Black actor not caring about fashion cliches of any kind and breaking down barriers, because many times it’s easier said than done.

LaKeith wore a custom Saint Laurent jumpsuit based off a womenswear piece from the Spring 2021 Ready-to-Wear collection, made up of sustainable materials and reminiscent of the brand’s Safari jackets from the 70s. You can also spot a white men’s shirt underneath with big peaked lapels.

The actor accessorized the look with Saint Laurent tortoiseshell sunglasses with butterfly wellington frames and nylon Dark Havana lenses, featuring Saint Laurent engraved temples, plus Saint Laurent black velvet Penny loafers with front saddle decorated with embossed YSL initials.

The look was very fluid and in line with Stanfield‘s nonchalant personality, indeed in a text exchange with GQ.com, his stylist Julie Ragolia explained how it was also a subtle way of using provocative fashion while respecting the dress code: “I wanted to express who he is as a person: someone who is equally thoughtful as he is playful. […]

In thinking of a way to balance the formality of such a show, this special nomination for LaKeith, and the seriousness of the times we are all living in, coming to such a look just felt thoughtful, while still being celebratory.”

LaKeith was nominated in the category Best Supporting Actor for his role as William O’Neal in Judas and the Black Messiah.

Judas and the Black Messiah is a 2021 American biographical drama film about the betrayal of Fred Hampton (played by Daniel Kaluuya), chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party in late-1960s Chicago, at the hands of William O’Neal (played by Lakeith Stanfield), an FBI informant.
