Julia von Boehm is a New York based stylist who began her career by assisting Carine Roitfeld, then Editor-in-Chief at Vogue Paris. She also works in frequent collaboration with esteemed industry photographers Mert & Marcus, Terry Tsiolis, Camilla Akrans, and Daniel Jackson.
She started very early to be interested in art, drawing and painting. She loved to look through fashion magazines and she was just interested and intrigued by the whole world.
Von Boehm decided very young to go to a special school where you learned French as a first language because she always knew she wanted to move to Paris and do fashion. She did a lot of art and she learned French, and when she was 18, she moved straight away to Paris and went to a fashion design school, which is called La Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. She started working there and studying there, and through a friend, she met Carine Roitfeld and started assisting her a little bit as a second assistant. Then the second assistant left, and Carine asked her if she wanted to become first assistant. She kind of dropped out of school and started working with her, because she was intrigued by the whole world of styling, which she didn’t even know existed before. Julia worked with her not only when she was at French Vogue, but also when she was still freelancing consulting for Tom Ford.
To branch out on her own, she did it in little steps because at first she was not Carine’s assistant anymore but she stayed in the magazine as an editor. But then she felt that it was really hard to grow, because you’re always going to feel a little like an assistant if you still work in the same environment.
Freelancing was scary at first because it is very insecure. You don’t know how many jobs you’re going to have. In the end it worked out really well, and she felt freer than she felt by staying in the magazine.
She started building her clientele through shoots, because (for example) with Nicole Kidman, she worked with her for Jimmy Choo when she was doing their advertisements. Julia was doing custom editorials with her and for some reason they kept meeting again and again. At the time, Nicole was looking for a stylist and she just called her even though she had never done red carpet before.
Nicole Kidman liked the fact that she had an editorial background and she thought that she’d have a little more insight of high fashion and the runway.
Eventually, she created JuliavonBoehm.com, an editorial platform focused on conscious fashion, wellness, clean beauty, and travel content. She offers a unique perspective and an alternative to the high volume, bite-sized media that inundates the current digital landscape. From interviews with Julia’s network in fashion and beauty, to wellness discoveries and advice on style and travel, each article shares Julia’s genuine trusted attention and insider point of view.
