On this sunny Wednesday–after several days of rain–I decided I wanted to celebrate the sun that finally peeked through the clouds with an in-depth analysis of one of my favorite ensembles from last year’s MET Gala, that of model Imaan Hammam.

As always, when it comes to this event, research is key and this usually means that it would take me more time to put every piece of information together.

In this climate, I’m looking for ways to communicate to people how hard it is to catch their attention, because disinformation and rage-baiting are reaching all time highs and I personally look at fashion and makeup as my escape, and I know no one will take them from me, no matter how sad I am and no matter how bad I feel about the state of the world right now (you may have noticed that this is an ongoing theme here lately).

That being said, let me tell you what I discovered about Imaan Hammam‘s dress for last year’s gala.

First of all, you need to know that (according to a press release) Imaan‘s dress was a golden custom Swarovski two-piece look comprising of a crystallized cape with 3,456 Gema crystals in a mix of six cuts and five tones and a satin column skirt embellished with 100,000 golden crystals, designed by Global Creative Director Giovanna Engelbert. It took a team of 7 artisans 14 days, just to create the cape.

In an interview for E! News host Erin Lim Rhodes chatted with Giovanna Engelbert, Karlie Kloss, Imaan Hammam and Anok Yai and Engelbert had the chance to explain that each one of them wore custom Swarovski gowns representing the “Garden of Time” theme: Giovanna was Mother Nature in green, Karlie was the Flowers in pink, Anok was the Water in blue and Imaan the Sun in gold.

For Hammam, according to Highsnobiety, on the table there was also the opportunity to honor her Egyptian roots, with a look that affected the grace of Ra. Take also into account that the model had her first fitting in Morocco while she was there to celebrate Ramadan.

Here is more insight from Swarovski‘s creative director Giovanna Engelbert: “The creative journey to capture the essence of the sun for Imaan Hammam began with a fun and lively discussion about the rich, golden yellow tones reminiscent of sapphires, quickly evolving into her portrayal as a North African queen—empowered, regal, and proudly reflecting her heritage.

This vision deeply inspired both of us, launching what felt like a dream project.
Our design process was infused with a goddess-like and North African royal aesthetic, a perennial source of beauty and strength that has always been captivating.

The cape, designed to echo the opulence of fine jewelry, was crafted with techniques typically reserved for jewellery. We both wanted this to be opulent and strong but relaxed and effortless at the same time.

She liked the idea of a low-waist skirt, which she believed added a modern, youthful, and relaxed flair to the look ideal for a fashion-forward gala!!

Despite the challenges of coordinating fittings from afar, with Imaan under the warm Marrakech sun and myself in snowy Stockholm, the process was incredibly smoothly, a testament to our aligned visions and the joy found in our collaboration.

Imaan’s constant radiant smile throughout this process confirmed her as the quintessential goddess of sunlight.

The ensemble dazzled with bright yellow crystals that captured and reflected light, simulating the sun’s rays, inspired by J.G. Ballard’s ‘The Garden of Time’: ‘The sun was always shining here, the gentle hours passing among the flowers.'”

The dress was complemented by Swarovski cuffs and ear cuffs, plus a custom pair of Aquazzura ankle sandals.

Let’s focus on one of the most important things about this getup: the makeup.

Imaan‘s MUA Nadia Tayeh opted for an exaggerated straight eyeliner and super golden bronzy skin, drawing inspiration from queen Nefertiti, channeling a sun goddess; all products used were courtesy of Estée Lauder.

We are delighted to share with you a detailed press release from the brand so that you can recreate the look at home:

First of all, the model indulged in a 24k gold facial by Tamara Tolordava to achieve that glowing skin.

Deserving of attention was also her knotted, sleek updo, courtesy of Hos Hounkpatin. The hairstyle was the cherry on top for this very sophisticated look, making sure that no hair would get tangled in her precious collar, serving also as a testament to Hos‘ ability to work with every type of hair texture.

To achieve this fabulous result, the pro used the following Kristin Ess products:

– Weightless Shine Working Serum
– 3-in-1 Flat Iron
– Anytime Anywhere Recovery Balm
– Signature Finishing Hairspray

Imaan also sported a long, oval-shaped, almost invisible French manicure to keep up with the chic vibe of the dress. The nail artist who was in charge of it was the lovely Eri Ishizu, a go-to manicurist for celebrities such as Gwen Stefani, Ayo Edebiri and Lizzo.

The Dutch model was styled by Julia Sarr-Jamois who with her editorial background was instrumental in truly understanding Imaan‘s vision that went beyond fashion and looking good, anchored in the knowledge that her roots are also what make her special in today’s model landscape, following the theme of the night without giving up on her being proud of who she is and what she represents in the community.

At first you would probably look at hers as a beautiful dress, but below the surface there was a lot more to uncover–I hope you learned something new today.
