Another cool outfit from the Toronto Film Festival was that of Gugu Mbatha-Raw for the “Motherless Brooklyn” Premiere, held at The Elgin on September 10, 2019 in Toronto, Canada.
Mbatha-Raw wore a Rodarte white ruffled dress with black embellishments resembling little feathers from the Spring 2018 Ready-to-Wear collection, paired with silver metallic Rupert Sanderson pointy pumps and Tiffany & Co. diamond pendant earrings.
Luckily there was a lot of information regarding her makeup, because MUA Nick Barose shared a lot of wisdom with Allure and on his Instagram (edited for clarity).
“80’s inspired fuchsia orchid lips for Gugu‘s TIFF 2019 premiere of ‘Motherless Brooklyn‘. The orchid colour scheme just kept following us around hotel lobbies and venues at TIFF so it was the perfect choice. Fuchsia is such an 80’s colour but when it’s matte instead of glossy it just feels more simplified (and more low maintenance because it stays and won’t slide around or bleed, and matte texture will always pack more punch with the colour, it just pops more and the color looks truer on your lips because it doesn’t have any shine to dilute it). Red can get too classic and serious when it comes to bold lips, but fuchsia is actually easier to wear than people think because it has both warm and cool tones and you can pick shades that lean toward red or toward purple blue to fit your complexion and mood.
On Gugu we went with Rouge D’Armani Matte in 506 and the best away to apply it, is directly from the tube so you get intensity in one coat (then clean around the edges with a lip brush, cotton swabs and some foundation around the mouth to create a perfectly clean backdrop for the colour to pop). Avoid dark smoky eyes especially with black, but keep it monochromatic with purple tones and a few extra lashes to make eyes pop without competing with the lips.

Sadly there was no mention of her hair process, but regardless, this is such a cool look that people can replicate to step into fall and liven things up a bit.

Motherless Brooklyn is a 2019 American neo-noir crime film written, produced and directed by Edward Norton, based on the 1999 novel of the same name by Jonathan Lethem. Set in New York City in 1957, the film follows a private investigator with Tourette syndrome, who is determined to solve the murder of his mentor.
In the movie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays the role of Laura Rose.
