This year’s MET Gala is approaching and I couldn’t escape writing about model Gigi Hadid attending it last year.

Each year, the blonde stunner has demonstrated that she takes the theme seriously and that her proximity to designers has been a major propeller of ideas and possibilities; I can’t commend her enough for it (especially because she takes the benefit aspect of the Gala very seriously too, while many seem to forget).

That being said, let’s explore which incredible work of art she wore to the event last year.

According to the brand, Hadid wore a custom Thom Browne corset dress embroidered with over two million white micro bugle beads and a draped tailored jacket in white silk moire with black duchess satin tipping and rose appliques throughout, paired with Thom Browne wingtip pumps in white and yellow pebble grain leather.

The gown took twenty people 5000 hours to embroider. The skirt took forty people a total of 8500 hours to embroider. Seventy people were involved in the making of the dress.

Apparently, yellow is Gigi‘s favorite color and Browne made the look more hers by using it throughout the dress.

Both her stylist Mimi Cuttrell and Thom Browne himself described their sources of inspiration during an interview with Vogue:

Browne: “I wanted her look to embody the fragility and immense work that you see in Andrew [Bolton]’s exhibit, blooming on the carpet and into The Metropolitan Museum of Art.”

Cuttrell: “I work very visually, so Pinterest is the best tool when sourcing images to aid in curating the perfect look. We focused on statues and structured stone columns in a garden with vines and floral details for Gigi’s look, and I was so inspired through references of ancient Italian gardens. I love how the light reflects beautiful yellow tones against the stone, which inspired the direction of yellow jewelry to accompany her look.”

À-propos jewelry, according to Luxferity, Hadid wore a Chopard necklace in 18k white gold and 18k yellow gold featuring 26.24-carats of yellow diamonds and 25.65-carats of white diamonds, a pair of earrings in 18k white gold and 18k yellow gold featuring 28.81-carats of pear-shaped yellow diamonds and diamonds, and a ring in 18k white gold featuring a 10.26-carat rectangular cut yellow diamond and white diamonds, all from the Haute Joaillerie Collection, and a ring in 18k white gold featuring diamonds from the L’Heure du Diamant Collection.

When it came to her makeup, I think it is pretty straightforward: Marilyn Monroe was on her mind.

Just look at her flick of liner, naturally full eyebrows and a wash of color on the cheeks.

The model’s hair was styled by Laura Polko in a short, deep parted bob with bright blonde strands curled away from her face–also inspired by Marilyn Monroe.

According to the pro, in an interview for InStyle, she stated that they wanted something classic and feminine to go with the Sleeping Beauty theme.

Thankfully for us, Polko also was kind enough to share the products she used with the publication, along with a little tutorial.

“First, I prepped Gig’s hair with Joico Defy Damage Protective Shampoo and KBOND20 Power Masque.
I created density and volume with Joico JoiWhip Foam [and created] texture and lift at the root with Joico Body Shake.”

“With the product in, they blow-dried the hair with a small round brush, created a deep left side part, and added curl with hot rollers. ‘On the left side of the part, [I pinned] hot rollers down and away from the face. On the top and right side, [I pinned] hot rollers on base for volume, [and] set with Joico Power Spray. Once cooled, [I released] the rollers [and] finished the lengths with a one-inch curling iron’.”

Of course we could not miss Gigi‘s nails, a true masterpiece created by Mei Kawajiri.

The manicure was described by the pro on her Instagram as “playful and classic” and was achieved by applying yellow 3D roses on a thin coat of nude gel, a sort of continuation of the model’s look.

All products used were courtesy of Nailboo, specifically a gel nail polish in the shade Nail-Flex & Chill for the rose-y base and another one in the shade “Here’s A Tip” for the white French.

Her stylist Mimi Cuttrell has been a silent force behind the model’s most interesting and beautiful looks, and through all these years I’ve never seen her take her success for granted or as leverage to be treated differently.

Cuttrell amassed one incredibly demanding client after another but her work load has never fazed her, which is truly impressive in a business like this.

Kudos to her for being a genuine professional and lovely human being.
