I am a sucker for vintage ensembles and whenever I see one on the red carpet I am instantly mesmerized. I know it sounds like a cliché but those dresses have a different flair to them and you can recognize them from a mile away.

It was the case with Emily Ratajkowski‘s look for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, and being a listener of her “High Low with Emrata” podcast, I know that she actively seeks vintage looks whenever she has the chance. Not only for public appearances but also for her personal archive.

As always, Emily stunned in a green vintage Jean Paul Gaultier Soleil Logo People Print semi-sheer mesh maxi skirt halter-neck dress, paired with a black Fendi mini Baguette bag with all-over embroidered small decorations in black and gold, decorated with a FF clasp.

One of the most relevant things about this look was–according to British Vogue and her stylist for the occasion, Jorden Bickham–that it seemed to pay homage to Christina Aguilera‘s halter-neck scarf top from the VMAs 2002.

Ratajkowski also accessorized the dress with a pair of gold Pīferi Fade 70 gold mirror sandals featuring their signature Comma heel, Melissa Kaye Honey Hoop Large 18k gold diamond earrings, a Melissa Kaye Kira bracelet with triple channel set diamonds and a gold vintage Gucci 1100 watch with interchangeable brown bezel.

When it came to makeup, Pat McGrath painted her face for the night, opting for the model’s signature sultry black eyeliner to frame the eyes and glossy, nude lips–bronzer in abundance.

As always, the pro used her own line of Pat McGrath Labs products and shared all the details about the look on her Instagram. Here below you’ll find the full list.

Hairstylist Evanie Frausto styled the model’s hair in a voluminous do with curtain bangs and wavy ends, giving off a very 70’s feel. The products used were courtesy of Bumble and bumble.

This look is one of the best from the “My Body” author and it is evident that stylists such as Jorden Bickham who have a huge editorial background, are also those who can concoct the most interesting narratives through clothing.

Maybe it’s my way of putting things together or what I find most pleasing when I look at fashion, but editorial stylists do have that je ne sais quoi that you can rarely find elsewhere.

Not for nothing I also loved Bickham‘s styling of Imaan Hammam for the 2021’s MET Gala–that vintage Atelier Versace 2002 dress was the stuff of dreams.
