These days I am in need of distractions because reality is becoming bleaker and bleaker.

I am not an optimistic person and I ask myself many questions while I am awake at night, looking at the state of the world while everything is silent around me–I let my thoughts run wild to my own detriment.

In rare moments of clarity, I look for long reads and intricate stories to tell on here, and that’s how I ended up picking today’s topic: Dove Cameron attending last year’s MET Gala.

For the event, Cameron was seen wearing an ethereal Diesel custom floral chiffon devoré Victorian gown that looked as if it was disintegrating on her body, as if she had been asleep for thousands of years. The sleeves connected to the long train, so that all became one.

In a video interview for Vogue, Dove put it this way: “Glenn (Martens, the label’s creative director) did a really great job designing something that feels like it grew out of my skin, out of my pores.”

According to the brand, “the Victorian-inspired silhouette was embroidered with distressed devoré tulle to give a burned out effect as if the dress is fading away into a train of soft tatters. Crafted from 60 meters of tulle and 60 meters of chiffon, the gown required 60 hours to construct.”

In the aforementioned interview, Dove further explained that the garment was very in line with the brand, very in line with the theme and very in line with who’s wearing it–her boyfriend Damiano wore a Diesel creation as well.

Shoes or jewelry were not directly identifiable but in a behind-the-scenes photo I could see that the shoes were a pair of metallic platform high heels.

I look at this ensemble as a parallel to the life and mental health of many individuals around the globe, consumed by what happens around them lately–very timely.

Thanks to a Byrdie article written by Sophie Vilensky, I came to understand her makeup artist Kale Teter‘s inspiration for the look and which products he used to achieve it:

“The dress is this gorgeously delicate shattered rose fabric, and we wanted the hair and makeup to compliment this ethereal forest nymph vibe. As always, I kept her skin very glowy and radiant. I like her to look polished but not too heavy, and then aside from beautiful skin, the lip was really the focus. We wanted them to look like velvety rose petals.”

The entertainer’s hair was styled in a long wavy, middle parted, romantic do by Jacob Rozenberg, elongating it with extensions by Merria Dearman.

The vision for the hairstyle I think was reminiscent of Sleeping Beauty‘s, which was blonde, soft, wavy and long.

When it came to the nails, Dove worked with her friend and nail artist Mel Shengaris who went for “botanical nails”.

In an article for the American fashion magazine InStyle, Shengaris detailed her working process, using Aprés products.

“She used the Gel-X Natural Almond Long Tips as the base. ‘Dove loves the shape of these tips, so I really don’t need to file much’. We chose the color Dear Diary from the new Light & Shadow Sheer Gel Couleur collection, and applied two thin coats. It’s a smooth and creamy color with a hint of pink.’ Next, she used the Diamond Gel and the Omni Light to adhere rose and leaf charms that matched Dove’s dress and finished with the Non-Wipe Glossy Top Gelcoat.”

The manicurist applied the same nail polish on the singer’s toes too, even though we can’t see them.

Cameron was styled by Chole and Chenelle Delgadillo, who have proved once again how much they are fashion forward in their approach. Their touch is sexy and not vulgar, feminine and never gimmicky.

I indeed think that Maika Monroe‘s press tour for “Longlegs” was delicious, from Courrèges to Marni, and the styling duo absolutely brought that same savoir-fair to the MET Gala last year, with a brand that is rarely–sadly–seen on the red carpet.
