This Tuesday I wanted to write about one of my favorite Italian brands and what better occasion than to analyze in further detail a vintage choice that was already part of our pop culture?

Blake Lively gave me all the reasons to do it, thanks to her attending the New York City premiere of her latest project “It Ends with Us“.

For the occasion, Lively donned a vintage multicolor Versace one shoulder dress from the Fall-Winter 2002 Ready-to-Wear collection, paired with holographic Christian Louboutin ankle sandals.

While stepping out of her van to reach the location of the premiere, the blonde stunner was also seen carrying a Judith Leiber Peony Flowering Clutch and Lorraine Schwartz jewels.

What was fascinating about her ensemble was the sentimental value she gave to her dress, which was a vintage Versace creation worn by Britney Spears in October 2002 while she attended the brand’s fashion show in Milan.

Here is what Blake had to say about the meaning of the dress for her, during an interview for Extra: “This is Britney‘s Versace dress, eh… 2002, the butterfly dress… It meant so much to me because of what she meant to me, like… she was just somebody who represented love and beauty and youth and hard work and determination and strength and she was in touch with her sexuality and her delicacy and she just sort of represented all and you know, her telling her own story, the way she did and the way she is about to in her biopic… I don’t know, Britney has just meant so much to me forever. I’m a forever Britney stan. And so… when this dress was available, I was like ‘Yes, I need it’ and I’ve had it you know, for almost a year now… and I’ve been saving for this… six months… but yeah.”

The actress echoed the same sentiment in one of her Instagram stories by writing: “The ultimate queen who made us all want to sparkle and write and share our stories.

Britney, us millennials all have a story of a moment, or of years that you made us want to shine and inspire awe, with strength, and joy and immensely hard work. Thank you for your example and your contribution to women telling their stories. So excited about your Biopic and all you have to come.”

For those who don’t know it, “It Ends with Us” is a book written by Colleen Hoover which was optioned for a film adaptation by Justin Baldoni. The book itself explores themes of domestic violence and emotional abuse, and if there is someone who is familiar with the matter is sadly Britney Spears (remember the #FreeBritney Movement? I suggest you check it out).

On a lighter note, let’s talk about Lively‘s makeup, which was very girly and airy thanks to the expert hands of Kristofer Buckle. The pro emphasized what was already there, matching the actress’ lips with the pink tone present in her dress.

All products used were luxe ones, courtesy of Chanel Beauty–here is the breakdown, courtesy of Buckle and Chanel‘s Beauty Community Instagram @welovecoco, a platform entirely dedicated to user-generated content.

For the hair, the “Gossip Girl” actress went for the same hairstyle Spears showed off at the aforementioned fashion show, but that is generally also her go-to style whenever she struts on the red carpet.

The side-parted long, soft, glamour waves were created by her friend and hairstylist Jennifer Yepez, who’s always top of mind whenever you need to look your best, diva self.

The nails were a true work of art, created by Elle Gerstein. According to the pro, the nails were reminiscent of classic 2000s vibes and the symbol depicted on them was that of rebirth and the guardian of gardens: the butterfly.

Apparently, the shimmery base was set by the nail artist while the detailed design was created by Blake herself using OPI‘s “My Me Era Collection”, a testament to her complete involvement in everything that pertains to her career.

Gerstein was also kind enough to write a little how-to tutorial for the manicure on her Instagram, which we’ll report here for accuracy (slightly edited for clarity):

“- One coat of OPI’s ‘Stay Classic‘ Base Coat.
– Apply 2 coats of OPISwitch to Portrait Mode‘.
– Add OPI ‘Stop at Nothin’‘, ‘Lookin’ Cute-icle‘ and ‘I Can Buy Myself Violets‘ mixed with ‘Alpine Snow‘ for texture to create the dotted flowers.
– Finish with one coat of OPIStay Shiny‘ Top Coat.”

As always, the “A Simple Favor” actress styled herself for the event, and I think this one was one of the best outfits she has ever picked.

Lively has a very close relationship with Donatella Versace and the fact that she bought this dress because it had such an impact on her was remarkable for me, because the actress is someone who can surely call the designer and ask for anything she would need, but she went the tougher route and competed with many vintage connoisseurs and bought it on a whim because she desperately wanted it; I call this… dedication.

It was undoubtedly one of the best red carpet looks of this year. The way it hugged her body and the way it complemented her personality and beauty was just so spot on.

I would also like for your to read this funny article by Vogue‘s Senior beauty & Wellness Editor Margaux Anbouba regarding this exact dress, in case you wondered about the competition around this incredible gown.
