We are revisiting several looks from last year’s Venice Film Festival and since everyone is on holiday and there is silence in the streets, I thought I might write about something simple and subdued to keep the pace.

What came to mind was Barbara Palvin‘s outfit for the event last year, a true example of minimalism on the red carpet.

Palvin stunned in a dark blue, Armani cut out dress with a bare back and thigh high slit, paired with shiny black Aldo Stessy 2.0 pillow walk stiletto pointy heels; on her left ring finger you could also spot her engagement ring to now husband Dylan Sprouse.

Barbara‘s makeup was courtesy of Charlotte Prevel, who mainly focused on the model’s skin by using a concoction of different blushes and foundations. To define Barbara‘s eyes even more, Prevel applied generous coats of mascara on her lower and upper lash line and on her lower and upper lashes.

The result was a slightly lived-in but natural effect.

To keep the look grounded, the MUA applied on her lips a light terracotta liquid lipstick.

When it came to the hair, it is indisputable that the model was channeling Brigitte Bardot with her updo, very glamour and effortless.

Hairstylist Owen Gould was the secret behind the look, using Hidden Crown Hair extensions to make Barbara‘s hair look fuller–here is a little tutorial, courtesy of the brand (slightly edited for clarity):

“After prepping the hair I sectioned two inch sections from the nape and worked my way up to the crown blow drying with a medium sized boar bristle brush for shine and volume.
– Once the hair was dry I clipped in Medium Auburn Brown Seamless Clip Ins throughout the head. This gave her natural hair, not only length but a subtle highlighted effect as well.
– The extensions also allowed me to give her those Bardot bangs that complement everyone.


– Once the extensions were in place, I strategically started to pin the hair up in a way that looks as if she had rolled out of bed and threw her hair up in less than a minute.


– Once she put on the dress, I then pulled a few pieces out and added a light serum for some shine and separation.”

The Hungarian model also showed off a short, natural manicure. Pretty usual for her.

Palvin was styled by Marc Eram, always requested by his model friends and those who love looking chic and fashionable without looking like they are doing the most.

Eram often styles Barbara‘s husband Dylan Sprouse for special occasions too, but I think you can witness his true potential by looking at the way he styles Jesse Jo Stark and Korean-American fashion model and DJ Soo Joo Park (apart from Barbara of course).

Poor Things is a 2023 film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Tony McNamara, based on the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray.

The movie premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2023, and won the Golden Lion there.
