We are living in a senseless world, so much so that I am desperately trying to find a semblance of meaning through my research and I think that writing a lengthy article will probably distract me from the nonsense there is around.

As you all may know by now, what better occasion than to write about the MET Gala, then? And specifically Bad Bunny‘s contribution to this year’s edition that I found quite interesting.

So let’s get into it.

In a fascinating interview for Vogue, the Puerto Rican entertainer said that he started planning the look with his stylist since at least January, and seen that the theme was about Black fashion, they felt like they could connect his outfit to Puerto Rican Afro-Caribbean culture.

For the occasion he indeed wore a custom Prada brown kid mohair suit, a tobacco poplin shirt finished with a raffia tie, a natural rope and leather belt, natural colored canvas Prada boots paired with embellished leather gloves and a Prada Fall-Winter 2025 runway bag.

The vision for the look was something classic, while experimenting with different textures.

Here are some more insights taken from the aforementioned interview: “His custom carob brown kid mohair suit, with a cropped jacket and a slightly flared trouser, brings to mind the kind of suits worn in the ’70s by salsa legends like Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe.

Accessorizing his tobacco poplin shirt is a tie made out of raffia, the same material used in the traditional pava, the Puerto Rican jíbaro hat. The pava is also the inspiration for the hat he’s wearing, made by De León Headwear.”

In an interview for Remezcla, I was able to find very valuable information regarding De León, who is a force of nature in her community: “De León is a fashion designer, hatmaker, and artist who was born and raised in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico and currently lives in San Juan. She did most of her creative studies at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Diseño de Puerto Rico before transferring to the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), and graduating with a fashion design degree.

De León specializes in hats and headpieces — from pavas to boleros — that are crafted by hand, free of harsh chemicals and synthetic materials. Her pieces stand out from the rest, imbued with her artistic touch and Puerto Rican touch.”

She was approached by Bad Bunny and his team two and a half weeks before the big event, and after meeting his publicist they decided to have a pava design with a puertorriqueño touch. Something not too costume-y or dramatic, shorter than usual but still elegant.

Even his belt referenced the jíbaros of the Puerto Rican mountainside, who used to keep up their pants with a rope; his Prada gloves were embellished with 600 yellow crystals while his Prada bowling bag represented all the good things he was carrying with him on tour.

His tiepin was a nod to his mother whose birthday was on the same day as the gala and particular attention was also dedicated to his precious accessories such as a pair of Panthère de Cartier earrings in white gold and onyx, each set with 29 brilliant-cut diamonds totaling 0.68 carats, Clash de Cartier Precious sunglasses in 18K rose gold, diamonds and onyx, oval shape frame and gray lenses, plus a Cartier floral brooch.

Benito‘s grooming was courtesy of Kimberly Bragalone, who used products by Kypris, Chanel Beauty, KohGenDo and Billy Jealousy to achieve a flawless and hydrated complexion.

I was luckier when it came to the Puerto Rican heartthrob’s hair, because his hairstylist chatted with The Tease and spilled the tea on how that infamous last-minute front curl came to be.

Here is a little tutorial thanks to the online hair focused publication:

“1. Prep the hair with IGK’s Good Behavior Spirulina Protein Smoothing Spray throughout the hair to protect against humidity.
2. After blow-drying, flat-iron the hair in the direction it will fall.
3. Once the base is set, apply a strong-hold gel to slick down the back and sides.
– Editor’s note: Austin used Balmain Styling Gel Maximum Hold
4. Lock in the style with a strong hold hairspray.
– Editor’s note: Austin used göt2b Glued Blasting Freeze Hairspray
5. Finish the look with IGK’s Disco Disco Clear Gloss Shine Spray for an extra glossy finish.”

Bad Bunny‘s manicure–even though hidden–was courtesy of Yoko Sakakura.

Martínez Ocasio (Bad Bunny‘s real surname) was styled by Storm Pablo: always a step ahead, always looking forward and supporting his community–because don’t forget, the world was built by immigrants and the wave of hate that’s engulfing so-called “democracies” right now is not right and those who are really causing your problems are laughing behind your back and you don’t even notice.
