Sometimes we need a little bit of magic in our lives, especially during difficult times. Also, Christmas is approaching, so there was a need for sparkle in the air.
That specific sparkle was brought to us through Ariana Grande walking the red carpet of the Australian premiere of her latest movie project “Wicked“.
Grande donned a custom Vivienne Westwood Couture gown that according to the brand was “hand-crafted in the London atelier, with an 18th century style corset, and layered with soft pink tulle”. The gown was adorned with light peach crystals that were also applied on the voluminous sleeves and layered tulle skirt.
The sparkling crystal Starburst artwork that we can see on the dress, originates from a drawing by Vivienne, inspired by a print from ‘The Laughing Cavalier’ painting by Frans Hals (1624). The Starburst artwork was first seen on the runway in the Vivienne Westwood Gold Label Spring-Summer 2010 show.
According to an article by Vogue Australia, we discovered that the dress was “a tribute to the beautiful Billie Burke‘s Glinda from The Wizard of Oz” (1939).
The singer praised the craftsmanship and the thoughtfulness behind every detail of the outfit, indeed every star burst on the sleeves and the corset was intended to be reminiscent of Glinda‘s wand from the original movie. The darker color of Ariana‘s hair also played a role in the decision making process. All in all, the dress could be intended as a modernization of the iconic one that many have grown to love.
The ensemble was accessorized with a diamond butterfly choker by Lorraine Schwartz, another nod to Glinda‘s necklace this time, and Jimmy Choo pumps.
When it came to the makeup, according to the aforementioned interview, she wanted to do something sparkly and “Galinda-fied”, and that’s where MUA Michael Anthony came into play: he opted for a very light wash of a light pink eyeshadow, topped with mature sparks of glitter.
To elongate her eyes the pro used flared false lashes and applied a pink lipstick, topped with a matching gloss and another holographic one on top for the most lovely and shiny, playful lips.
The entertainer, Michael and the brand shared a list of the products you can use to replicate the look, of course they were all from Ariana‘s new makeup line r.e.m. beauty:
“- r.e.m. beauty x Wicked – ozdust eyeshadow palette shades “perfectly pink“ + “goodness knows”
– r.e.m. beauty x Wicked – galinda glow drops
– r.e.m. beauty x Wicked – luxury beautification under eye masks
– r.e.m. beauty x Wicked – blush + lipstick in “she’s so good” from the galinda makeup set
– r.e.m. beauty – practically permanent lip stain marker in “booked n busy“
– r.e.m. beauty – on your collar plumping lip gloss in “pink razor” + “chuckie”
– r.e.m. beauty – sweetener foundation in “light 8NW”
– r.e.m. beauty – sweetener concealer in “light 4G”
– r.e.m. beauty – hypernova satin matte bronzer in “solar storm”
– r.e.m. beauty – interstellar highlighter in “miss mercury”
– r.e.m. beauty – flourishing lengthening mascara”
Ariana‘s hair was styled in a half up half down wavy do with a tendril caressing a side of her face by Gabor Kerekes, who probably took inspiration from the work he did on her in the movie. For those who don’t know it, he worked as her personal hairstylist in the famous flick.
The style, dramatic but romantic meshed incredibly well with the sinuous lines of the dress and made everything more cohesive.
She also showed off a long oval-shaped pink French manicure. From the look of it, it seems like the work from the pro who already worked with her during this year’s MET Gala, who I have contacted already, and I am waiting for confirmation from his part. I will update this post in case the pro will get back to me.
Grande was styled by Mimi Cuttrell, the master of this new chapter in Ariana Grande‘s adult life.
Cuttrell has been able to update and streamline the entertainer’s past way of dressing, opting for fits that are more demure and mature, but keeping an eye on the trends that are dominating society.
Coincidentally that’s also how you balance being an actress and a singer, a private citizen and a public figure–Cuttrell will always hold a special place in our hearts.
