I am very excited to write about one of my favorite outfits from this year’s CFDA Fashion Awards, especially because I get to talk about real talent and craftsmanship, all at the same time.

The case in point was internet personality turned singer and actress Addison Rae, who not only showed us that her perseverance with TikTok paid off but also that her taste in fashion is way more layered than one can assume, and I love it.

For the event, Rae donned a Thom Browne classic corset with signature shaped hem detailing in medium grey super 120’s twill, paired with a Spring-Summer 2018 archive ‘Mermaid‘ skirt in iridescent paillette and tulle madras embroidery and longwing platform brogue heels with a vinyl overshoe.

One of her most peculiar accessories was a conch shell used as a clutch and a Mikimoto Fusion Akoya and Black South Sea Cultured Pearl Strand necklace with diamond Rondelles and a 18k white gold closure.

Her makeup was the stuff of magic thanks to–as people lovingly call her–”Mother” Pat McGrath, who applied a glittery grey eyeshadow on Addison‘s lids to match the sparkles of her dress, finishing everything off with a rose-y lipstick, dark pink blush and black mascara.

When it came to her hair, Addison went along with the vibe of the dress, opting for undone beachy waves styled by Lucas Wilson.

We can also tell you something more about her color, which was lighter than the warmer one she had on while attending the Academy Museum Gala more than a week before. According to InStyle colorist Matt Rez opted for a “Diet Blonde” shade, pretty much referencing Rae‘s hit “Diet Pepsi“.

To conclude, I’d love to thank Addison‘s stylist Dara Allen for her incredible contribution to the fashion conversation lately. She has been able to perfectly conjugate what’s past and what’s present, according to the sensibilities of her clients.

Luckily, people like Hunter Schafer or Rae know how to shift people’s perceptions, but they also respect history, which is not a given in a society deeply influenced by what’s trendy today and not tomorrow.

I think Dara has been very keen on bringing the conversation back to the clothes, how they are manufactured (some of her TikToks are true gems in that regard) and how they make you feel, regardless of what’s in vogue right now (pun very much intended). Her editorial background will always do it for me.

Don’t sleep on Dara, she deserves all the flowers–and kudos to Addison for working with some of the greatest talents out there, don’t underestimate her because she knows her stuff.

The CFDA is the Council of Fashion Designers of America. It was founded in 1962 by publicist Eleanor Lambert and is a not-for-profit trade association of over 450 American fashion and accessory designers.

The organization promotes American designers in the global economy. In addition to hosting the annual CFDA Fashion Awards, the organization develops future American design talent through scholarships and resources in high schools, colleges, and post-graduate schools.

The CFDA also provides funding and business opportunities for working designers. Through the CFDA Foundation, the organization supports charitable causes.

The 2024 awards were once again in partnership with Amazon Fashion and took place on October 28 at New York City’s American Museum of Natural History on the Upper West Side.

Thom Browne served as the CFDA‘s chairman and was also nominated in the categories American Womenswear Designer of the Year and American Menswear Designer of the Year.
