Matthew Mazur is a stylist to the stars but also a widely booked New York-based DJ, creative director and designer.

A first generation son of a Polish father and Peruvian mother, Mazur grew up in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Straddled between two cultures, he once struggled to express–and, at times, accept–his Latinx roots in a predominantly Polish neighborhood.

Right before high school, he thought he didn’t want to be Latin and he would make his Peruvian grandmother wait on the corner because he was embarrassed. It wasn’t until leaving his Catholic school in Greenpoint and attending LaGuardia High that he finally became comfortable expressing and representing the culture he’d tried so desperately to compartmentalize. This acceptance eventually gave him the confidence to share the sounds of his childhood in his DJ sets, a career born purely by accident thanks to a bit of luck and good timing.

He decided to work as a DJ even before styling, because when he was in school at Parsons he was really broke and he used to go out to Avenue a lot (a 21+club). One night, he was celebrating a friend’s birthday at someone’s apartment and he was playing music off his iPod and his friend who was a promoter there asked him if he wanted to DJ at the club and he told her that he had never DJed before.

He did it anyway and eventually he got a residency at Avenue. He was 18—he wasn’t even allowed to be inside—but he played there on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The whole reason he started DJing in New York was because he felt like the music scene was bad. His friends and him just wanted to dance. He started to get really cocky when he was really young and his two best friends and him would persuade the DJs that were DJing at the club that he was supposed to go on next.

Those people who liked his selections included noted fashion designer Jeremy Scott. A longtime fan of Scott’s since high school, Mazur felt determined to one day cross paths with the lauded avant-garde designer. One of Mazur’s friends was a stylist and he brought him as his fake assistant to Jeremy’s showroom one day. Then he became friends with Scott’s head of PR who had been his number one since day one. He would come to parties of his and eventually Mazur asked if he could DJ one of Jeremy’s parties. When Jeremy accepted, that’s where it started.

Scott began booking the rising DJ for NYFW after-parties and eventually plucked Mazur to join his team immediately following graduation from Parsons. He was doing in-house everything, and met CL through him. She asked him to work on her creative team for styling and everything just blossomed from there.

Matthew joined his fashion client and pop sensation Kim Petras on her first major headlining tour as the opening DJ.

His roster of clients now also includes Julia Fox, Lil Nas X, Coi Leray, Dove Cameron and Lourdes Leon among others.
