Paul BettanyΒ was born 27 May 1971 and is an English actor.
Bettany was born inΒ London,Β the son of Anne (nΓ©eΒ Kettle), a stage singer, theatre teacher, and stage manager, andΒ Thane Bettany, a dancer, actor, drama teacher andΒ godfatherΒ toΒ Sophie, Countess of Wessex. Bettany was raisedΒ Roman Catholic, although his church attendance drifted after his confirmation. He later attendedΒ MethodistΒ andΒ Church of EnglandΒ congregations with his father, who experimented with different Christian branches. Bettany later became anΒ atheist.Β While his father taught at the all-girlsΒ boarding schoolΒ Queenswood School, nearΒ Hatfield,Β Hertfordshire, the family lived on the school grounds.
When Bettany was 16, his brother Matthew died at age 8 after falling onto concrete from a tennis pavilion roof at Queenswood. Soon after, Bettany dropped out of school, left home, and became a street performer in London. He lived in a small flat and earned money by playing hisΒ guitarΒ in the streets as aΒ busker. His parents later divorced. After two years, he found a new job in a home for the elderly. After working there for a year, Bettany enrolled at the Drama Centre in London.Β He hadΒ dyslexiaΒ prior to it being recognized as aΒ learning disability.
In 1990, at the age of 19, Bettany began a three-year course at theΒ Drama Centre LondonΒ inΒ Chalk Farm. He made his stage debut inΒ Stephen Daldry’s acclaimed West End revival ofΒ An Inspector CallsΒ at theΒ Aldwych Theatre, playing the part of Eric Birling. He also appeared in theΒ Royal Shakespeare Company’s productions ofΒ Richard III,Β Romeo and Juliet, andΒ Julius Caesar. When Bettany was 21, he appeared in aΒ BBCΒ production ofΒ Oliver Twist, playingΒ Bill Sikes.
He made his film debut with a small part inΒ Bent, aΒ HolocaustΒ drama. He had roles in the television productionsΒ Killer NetΒ andΒ Coming Home. His last stage work was inΒ One More Wasted YearΒ andΒ Stranger’s HouseΒ at theΒ Royal Court Theatre. He filmed several more movies, including his first leading role inΒ Gangster No. 1.
Back in Hollywood, writer/directorΒ Brian HelgelandΒ (L.A. Confidential) was planning a new film calledΒ The Sin EaterΒ (also known asΒ The Order). He was impressed by Bettany’s audition tape, though Helgeland eventually decided to filmΒ A Knight’s TaleΒ instead. The studio executives were not impressed, but Helgeland was determined to cast him, even writing the part ofΒ ChaucerΒ for him.Β A Knight’s TaleΒ would be Bettany’s first big Hollywood production. After the movie wrapped, Helgeland, determined that Hollywood should recognize Bettany’s talent, showed the audition tape to many of his peers, includingΒ Ron Howard, who promptly cast Bettany inΒ A Beautiful Mind. AfterΒ A Beautiful Mind, Bettany was offered the role of serial killerΒ Francis DolarhydeΒ inΒ Red Dragon, oppositeΒ Edward NortonΒ andΒ Anthony Hopkins. He turned down the role in favour of accepting a part withΒ Stellan SkarsgΓ₯rdΒ andΒ Nicole KidmanΒ inΒ Lars von Trier’sΒ Dogville.
Bettany’s next major project saw him starring again alongsideΒ Russell CroweΒ inΒ Peter Weir’sΒ Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.
On 28 June 2004, Bettany and 13 other actors were included in the 2004 invitation to join theΒ Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.Β DogvilleΒ andΒ The ReckoningΒ were released in limited cinemas in 2004. In September of that year, Bettany made his leading-man debut inΒ Wimbledon, a romantic comedy withΒ Kirsten Dunst. The film’s cast would also introduce him toΒ Jon Favreau, playing his manager, a relationship that would return when Favreau cast him as the voice ofΒ J.A.R.V.I.S.Β inΒ Iron Man. In mid-2005, Bettany filmedΒ FirewallΒ inΒ Vancouver, Canada, a thriller also starringΒ Harrison FordΒ andΒ Virginia Madsen. He spent the autumn of 2005 filmingΒ The Da Vinci Code, based onΒ Dan Brown’s best-selling novel and starringΒ Tom Hanks,Β Audrey TautouΒ andΒ Ian McKellen. In the film, he played anΒ Opus DeiΒ monk named Silas.
In 2007, Bettany went to London to star inΒ There For Me, written by his friends Dan Fredenburgh and Doraly Rosen. In 2008, he appeared in theΒ New Line CinemaΒ family fantasyΒ Inkheart, playing the part of a fire-eater namedΒ Dustfinger.Β In 2009, he appeared asΒ Charles DarwinΒ inΒ Creation, starring opposite wifeΒ Jennifer Connelly. In 2010, Bettany appeared alongsideΒ Johnny DeppΒ andΒ Angelina JolieΒ inΒ The TouristΒ and portrayed the archangel Michael inΒ Legion, a film depicting divine vengeance upon humanity. He starred in the filmsΒ PriestΒ andΒ Margin Call, both released in 2011.
Bettany reprised his voice role as J.A.R.V.I.S. in 2010’sΒ Iron Man 2, 2012’sΒ The Avengers, 2013’sΒ Iron Man 3, andΒ Disneyland’sΒ InnoventionsΒ attraction. In 2014, Bettany starred alongsideΒ Johnny DeppΒ and fellow British actorΒ Rebecca HallΒ in the feature filmΒ Transcendence. He was once again paired with Depp inΒ Mortdecai, a 2015 motion picture also starringΒ Gwyneth PaltrowΒ andΒ Ewan McGregor.Β He playedΒ VisionΒ in the 2015 filmΒ Avengers: Age of Ultron,Β and reprised his voice role as J.A.R.V.I.S. again in the same film. Bettany portrayed Vision again in the sequelsΒ Captain America: Civil War andΒ Avengers: Infinity War.
Bettany also stars asΒ Ted KaczynskiΒ in theΒ Discovery ChannelΒ television show,Β Manhunt: Unabomber. Bettany replacedΒ Michael K. WilliamsΒ inΒ Solo: A Star Wars Story, after Williams was removed from the final film, as he was unable to return to set during the film’s reshoots. Bettany was cast in his place, with the character being reworked from a motion-capture alien to a human.
On 20 January 2018, it was reported that Bettany was nearing a deal to playΒ Prince Philip, Duke of EdinburghΒ on theΒ NetflixΒ seriesΒ The Crown, succeedingΒ Matt Smith.Β Days later, on 25 January, it was reported byΒ TVLineΒ that Bettany was ultimately unable to sign on due to scheduling conflicts.
In 2021, Bettany starred alongsideΒ Elizabeth OlsenΒ in the Marvel television miniseriesΒ WandaVision, which aired onΒ Disney+. In the miniseries, Bettany portrays a new version of hisΒ Marvel Cinematic UniverseΒ Character, Vision.
In 2020, it became known that Bettany will star asΒ Alexander NixΒ in an upcoming film on theΒ FacebookβCambridge Analytica data scandal.
