Zoë Kravitz is a true inspiration when it comes to effortlessness on the red carpet. Her very good genes are probably responsible for that and we can’t do anything more, apart from taking notes. Let’s see the reasoning behind her look for the 2018’s MET Gala–Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.
Kravitz wore a vintage Yves Saint Laurent asymmetrical dress in sequined black lace from the AW1990-1991 Haute Couture collection slightly reworked for the occasion (the scan comes from our book about YSL‘s catwalks–click here to see a better picture of it). The pink bows were replaced with black ones, but the light hue was still present in her big earrings. The look was paired with black lacquered Saint Laurent Amber 105 heeled sandals with a slightly square toe.
The actress accessorized the look with Jacob & Co. 100ct Morganite diamond earrings and a matching ring on the right index finger. Her vintage engagement ring which was curated by The One I Love (an antique and modern jewelry store in NYC) sparkled on her left ring finger. According to a People.com interview: “The store describes the piece as a ’18th Century diamond half loop’ that features a row of collet-set rose cut diamonds in a closed back setting of silver-topped gold, which allows for the stones to emit a rich smoky hue.”
The inspiration behind her choice of clothing could be reminiscent of mourning veils in a sexy key but there was no specific mention about it anywhere–maybe it was just an obvious move since she is the Global Ambassador for YSL Beauty.
In an interview for The Hollywood Reporter, her long time makeup artist Nina Park explained her worry about the theme and her sigh of relief once she was sent a picture of the outfit: “The dress was such a focus itself, and there was a lot going on, so we wanted to make [the look] very skin focused and clean, subdued with monochromatic colors to bring out her features. With Zoë, when she puts the dress on she sees what kind of woman she wants to be for that night. Last year’s pink Oscar de la Renta gown was more of an Audrey Hepburn theme, whereas the skin-showing ensemble this year dictated a beauty look that wasn’t too ‘drastic or aggressive, but toned down.'”
As for the products used and the application process (according to the same THR interview and another one for Vogue.com), Park listed:
“- YSL’s pencil and Couture Brow Mascara—used on the inner brow to ‘rough up the ends’ since the actress likes a messier brow toward the front—to elongate and exaggerate the arched shape;
– YSL Baby Doll Kiss & Blush Duo Stick #6, which Park used on Kravitz‘s eyes, cheeks and lips.
She applied the multitasking formula on her eyes with a medium-sized brush, straight from the tube onto the apples of her cheeks, blended with her fingers for an imperfect flush, and pressed the darker shade into her lips using a tapping movement with her fingertip;
– YSL Touche Éclat Glow Shot, to perfect her complexion. A shimmering liquid highlighter, swept along the tops of her cheekbones and under her brow bone.”
