Kim Kardashian West is well known for her knowledge of Fashion History and I found it truly inspiring to see the care she put into contacting the Mugler atelier and also her physical effort to be in good shape to sport such a difficult dress.
Despite the backlash for her “impossible waist”, let’s see what actually went down during the preparation for this year’s Met Gala.
As mentioned above, Kim had to waist-train to fit into the dress, she literally took corset breathing lessons from Mr. Pearl himself.
Mr. Pearl is a very famous corset maker, he worked for Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen, Thierry Mugler and John Galliano to name a few. His passion started when he first had to lace his grandmother into corsets and he thinks that wearing them helps him emotionally and physically, it gives him a sort of balance that helps him through life. He was a club kid and he happened to meet McQueen and Mugler through acquaintances or at clubs – it obviously led him to collaborations with both, even if he was never interested in fashion to begin with. He now works for private clients because he does not like the pace that fashion has nowadays, he thinks that corsets should fit like a glove, so it would be unrealistic to mass-produce something that personal.
When we look at the inspiration behind this dress, Kim was very clear: “This is the first time in 20 years Mr. Mugler has designed for the House of Mugler.
So to come and design this gown for me is such an honour. This is about eight months in the making. He envisioned me this California girl stepping out of the ocean, wet, dripping.”
Quotes from Harper’s Bazaar.com’s article
Kardashian shared some images of Sophia Loren wearing a see-through wet dress in the movie Boy on a Dolphin to her Instagram Stories, suggesting that this was the starting point.
I highly suggest you to watch Vogue’s video about her fitting for the occasion, it explains the whole process into detail and it also shows the true passion Kim has for fashion.
So refreshing for everyone who judges her just because of her past. And do not forget to scroll all the way down to watch the little documentary about the marvelous Mr. Pearl, very interesting.
Sorry for the bad quality of some of the red carpet (or should I say pink) videos.
