Actor Benedict Cumberbatch walked the red carpet of the MET Gala 2019 with his wife Sophie Irene Hunter.
He wore an Emma Willis ivory silk riding stock tie shirt, matching hand rolled silk pocket square and ivory silk fringed evening scarf, all designed and made at Willis‘ Gloucester workrooms.
His three piece suit was created in collaboration with his stylist/taylor Joe Woolfe and it was made of cream vegan bamboo fabric supplied by HFW Ltd. On his head a bespoke Lock&Co. Panama Montecristi hat.
As for his inspiration, he undoubtedly went for a dandy look, totally on theme.
Being committed to an ethical lifestyle, Cumberbatch‘s styling wasn’t an easy task, according to an interview for the Daily Mail with his stylist Joe Woolfe: “We spent ages talking about it and planning it for about three weeks before he flew to the U.S.–he’s vegan, so that meant there were a lot of fabrics we couldn’t use. We ended up using an amazing English bamboo fabric from Huddersfield Fine Worsteds.”
As you all may know, vegans do not wear materials derived from animal suffering, i.e. wool and his stylist was on strict instructions to ensure every aspect of the ensemble was vegan. Even when he bought the white shirt, he made sure the silk would meet the actor’s rigorous standards.
“It was silk, but peace silk, which doesn’t involve killing the worms, so it’s fully vegan and cruelty-free. I had to get a few for him to choose from, because I know what he’s like, and if I just give him one thing he’ll feel like he’s being cornered. But he always ends up choosing what I offered first!”
When it comes to his grooming, I am pretty sure he collaborated with his personal hairstylist/MUA (seen his approach even to his personal styling) but since I am still researching and looking for confirmations, I will update this post in case any new information emerges.
