Jeanine Lobell is a creative entrepreneur, who parlayed a career as a makeup artist into a global cosmetics company when she launched Stila in 1994.
After selling Stila to Estée Lauder in 1999, Lobell has continued to focus on entrepreneurial opportunities along with her make up artistry working with major fashion magazines, photographers and celebrities.
Her parents are from Queens, but she grew up in Sweden, then she moved to London.
Her first discovery of the opportunities makeup could offer, was when her best friend went to makeup school, so she decided to go too (it was the Complexions London School of Makeup) but only after going to mime school first, because she wanted to join the circus. She wasn’t good at school and she knew she wasn’t good at keeping a “normal job”.
She moved to Paris and then back to the States, where she had the opportunity to work at a Chanel counter part-time but she got fired. She then moved to LA and started doing makeup on jobs, her first one was the video for the movie Hairspray (the 1988 version).
She worked on REM, Wilson Phillips, Mötley Crüe, Ten Thousand Maniacs, Mariah Carey, Pebbles, New Edition, Ice-T and several rappers–these experiences gave her the chance to start networking.
In LA, one of her friends opened a clothing boutique and Lobell helped her with it, it was all private label, you could buy it and put your name on it, but Jeanine didn’t want to, so she came up with the name “Stila” which sounded like “stil” in Swedish, which means style. With no technical knowledge, they built a brand from scratch and after 5 years they sold it.
Having a big love for makeup, she moved to New York and focused on editorials, keeping her celebrity clientele minimal–after all, her roster of clients includes Cate Blanchett, Michelle Williams, Natalie Portman and Rachel Weisz, to name a few.
One career milestone was a successful stint at Kevyn Aucoin Beauty as Creative Director, breathing new life into the company that resulted in its sale.
Lobell has also lent her talents to a variety of social media campaigns such as Chanel, NARS and Marc Jacobs Beauty.
In addition to raising four children, a personal highlight has been helping establish a school for the Samburo tribal children in Kenya.
Recently, she created Rx Breakup, an app designed to help you get over a recent breakup or lingering obsession. The app combines clinical and creative expertise delivering a smart, stylish guide for moving on in the digital age.
She is now the founder of Neen, a clean makeup brand.
